Eco Expo Asia 2018 – Waste Less Save More for a Low-carbon Future
Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd., and co-organised by the Environment Bureau of the Hong Kong SAR Government, the thirteenth edition of Eco Expo Asia took place on 25 - 28 October 2018 at the AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong, under the theme “Waste Less Save More for a Low-carbon Future”.
Eco Expo Asia 2018 continued to attract an international visitor attendance with a record breaking of 14,824 buyers coming from 106 countries/regions (an increase of 5.67% from 2017), including 91 buying missions, which comprised of more than 1,500 representatives from 25 countries/regions. Top 10 visiting countries/regions were namely, the Chinese mainland, U.S.A., Korea, Taiwan, India, Malaysia, Russia, the Philippines, Thailand and Australia.
Continuing International Participation
Eco Expo Asia had proven itself as a leading trade show for environmental products, technologies and solutions in the Asian region. This year, the Expo attracted 338 exhibitors from 19 countries/regions. Besides, 14 overseas group participations presented at the fair, including participations from the Austria, Canada, the Chinese Mainland (Foshan, Guangdong, Hunan, Inner Mongolia, Macao, Shenzhen, Zhaoqing), Europe, Japan, Korea, State of Bavaria (Germany) and Switzerland.
Staunch Government Support
Eco Expo Asia continued to receive support from government officials and industry leaders in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and across Asia Pacific.
This year, there were 10 local government departments exhibited in Eco Expo Asia together with the Environment Bureau, promoting environmental policies and a range of green projects. Besides, over 430 representatives of government from Asian countries including Japan, Korea, Macao, Malaysia, the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong visited the Expo, underlining the value they viewed the Expo as a premier platform to acquire the latest and quality environmental solutions.
In response to the development of the Greater Bay Area, the brand-new “Greater Bay Area Zone” was launched under the support of Environment Bureau, Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, aiming to facilitate business cooperation and information exchange of the green industry in the region. With the staunch support of the Greater Bay Area cities, the zone attracted the participation of some 100 eco enterprises and government bodies, showcasing a wide array of green products and solutions related to energy saving, waste reduction and combating climate change. In particular, Environmental Protection Department, Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Green Council Limited, Environmental Protection Bureau, Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region, Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute, Guangdong Environmental Protection Department, Human Settlements And Environment Commission Of Shenzhen Municipality, Nanhai Environmental Protection Department of Foshan and Zhaoqing Environmental Protection Department organised group pavilions with a focus to highlight the latest green achievements in respective regions.
This year the “Smart Construction for Quiet” pavilion organised by the Hong Kong Institute for Acoustics (HKIOA) and the Hong Kong Construction Association (HKCA) made its debut at the Expo. The pavilion featured green building products and solutions for noise-related construction issues, a key concern for many rapidly developing cities and regions in Asia. Among the featured products were two sets of hybrid construction excavators from the renowned Japanese manufacturer KOBELCO. The excavators produce low-carbon emissions, little noise and demonstrate a more environmentally-friendly solution for the construction and other industries.
The Expo’s Startup Zone continued to be in the spotlight, with 20 Hong Kong startups capturing attention by showcasing the latest green ideas and product technologies. The companies included So Organic Biotech Enterprise Ltd, which develops organic fertilisers, natural probiotics and bio-nutrients for pets under the SOBE brand. The Expo offered an effective platform for startups to expand their business networks, while the Startup Forum provided the companies with an exclusive opportunity to elaborate their business vision and products in detail.
Participation of Leading Industry Players
Renowned brands and leading industry players were also presented at the Expo. Baguio Green Group Ltd, China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection (Hong Kong) Investment Co Ltd, China Everbright International Limited, China Trustful Group Limited, Changsha Zoomlion Environmental Industry Co., Ltd, Envac Far East Ltd., Honest Motors Limited, Hyundai Hong Kong Co. Limited, Keppel Seghers - Zhen Hua Joint Venture, M-U-T Maschinen-Umwelttechnik- Transportanlagen GmbH, Rieckermann, SID, Siemens, SUEZ NWS Ltd. and Villiger Entsorgungssysteme AG were among the many that exhibited at the Expo.
In order to raise public awareness on environmental protection, Eco Expo Asia was open to the general public for free on 28 October. 3,531 public visitors attended the Public Day, indicating the strong public interest in environmental-related events.
A variety of engaging events were held, including Public Day Forum on smart water tips, Eco Careers Forum, a Mini Film Premiere on Hong Kong’s Plastic Story and Green Workshops etc. Visitors could also purchase a wide selection of environmentally-friendly products at the Green Mart.

The four-day Eco Expo Asia 2018 created tremendous business opportunities. In addition, it had been an effective learning and networking experience for all. As a successful trading and networking platform for suppliers to tap the fast growing markets in the Chinese mainland and across Asia, Eco Expo Asia will be held on 30 October – 2 November 2019.
