Hong Kong’s First Gift Design Competition to Enhance its Role as
the World’s Giftware Sourcing Hub

(Hong Kong, 27 April 2012) The First Gift Design Competition under the ‘Hong Kong Smart Gifts Design Awards’ hosts its Presentation Ceremony today. Winning designs will go on display for 4 days from today at The Hong Kong Gifts and Premium Fair 2012 (Hall 5E – E23).

As 2012 is ‘Hong Kong Design Year’, The Hong Kong Exporters’ Association (The HKEA) has organized the first 'Hong Kong Smart Gifts Design Awards' (The Award). The Award is fully supported and funded by the CreateSmart Initiative (CSI) that comes under the Government’s Create Hong Kong. Dedicated to sharpening the Hong Kong gift industry’s competitive edge, the objectives are encouraging Hong Kong’s extensive gift industry to transform from OEM to ODM and OBM, thereby securing and consolidating Hong Kong’s position as the world’s major sourcing hub for giftware. The competition will help young people to appreciate the value that innovative design and sound marketing strategies bring to any product or business.

The ground-breaking competition has been overwhelmed by the public where almost 300 applications have been received. The Award is comprised of a Corporate Group and a Student Group. There are five categories within the Corporate Group: ‘Corporate Promotional Gifts: Custom-Made’, ‘Corporate Promotional Gifts: For Mass’, ‘Consumer Gifts: For Home’, ‘Consumer Gifts: For Workplace’ and ‘Consumer Gifts: For Play’. Gold, Silver and Bronze are awarded for each Category within the Corporate Group. The theme for the Student Group is ‘Gifts for Better Life’. Gold, Silver, Bronze and 7 Merits will be awarded within the Student Group. A ‘Judge Award’ is also given. A total of seven entries are selected among all groups by each individual judge adjudicator to receive the Judge Award.

Overwhelming response with high quality designs of business value

The Judging Panel was chaired by Mr. Benson Pau, Vice Chairman of The Hong Kong Exporters’ Association. Members of the Judging Panel will include Mr. Freeman Lau, (Vice Chairman of Hong Kong Design Centre, HK), Mr. Lee Chi Wing, (Founder of Milk Design, HK), Prof. Tak Lee (Associate Dean of School of Design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, HK) / Professor Roger Ball PhD (Associate Professor of School of Design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Director of Size China Lab), Mr. Roger Shing (Corporate Director of Procurement, New World Hospitality, HK), Mr. Roger Swales (Founder of GRO Design, Netherlands), Mr. Fumio Takashima (President and CEO of BALS Corporation (Francfranc), Japan), and Prof. Tong Huiming (Dean & Professor of School of Design, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, China).

The Award not only emphasizes ideas and outlook in the designs, but also their commercial value including application, price and popularity in the retail industry. The ground-breaking competition has been overwhelmed by the public where almost 300 applications have been received. The gifts are mostly lively and creative, fully showcasing the innovation of Hong Kong designers and youngsters. A series of innovative gifts include a memo pack which reflects the removal of tenements as well as a magnet and video memo which allows video and message recording.

The Project Convener of Hong Kong Smart Gifts Design Awards 2012, Mr. Benson Pau was highly satisfied with the results, “Considering different views, ‘Hong Kong Smart Gifts Design Awards’ is already great as its first time. We got support from many companies in terms of good quantity and quality. The aim of organizing this competition is to drive transformation among industry, at the same time to encourage more companies to enhance the industry. This will ultimately make Hong Kong a giftware sourcing hub. When clients think of giftware, they remember Hong Kong has good designs.”

Judging Panel

Mr. Freeman Lau, (Vice Chairman of Hong Kong Design Centre, HK)
“This is not just about design but also market focus. This balance doesn't exist in other competitions. Holding this competition in Hong Kong is very meaningful. Hong Kong has the biggest international giftware show. It motivates the giftware business, gives great value to young designers.”

Mr. Lee Chi Wing, (Founder of Milk Design, HK)
“Apart from idea, discussions among judges would see if there's good quality. All discussions so far illustrate innovation of products and production quality. The future design requires a mix of factors including creativity, production quality and market.”

Professor Roger Ball PhD (Associate Professor of School of Design, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Director of Size China Lab)
“The first year of the contest is always great to get it started and what I really like about this contest is the idea of creating your own brands. If HK could raise its level of design up to the standard of Europe or USA then that’s just gonna drive the importers and increase the profitability here.”

Mr. Roger Shing (Corporate Director of Procurement, New World Hospitality, HK)
“Apart from the design’s outlook and functions, we consider its own value, whether it's worth buying. Some may sell at low prices but with good value. Some may be more expensive which target different market segments.”

Mr. Roger Swales (Founder of GRO Design, Netherlands)
“Very good. I feel there is a very broad collection of works from a very naïve, very rich starting point, very strong ideas to very mature products and the products that will show that variation, and there are very simple objects using single materials, and some very complicated objects. But I think it kind of shows the quality that is coming now from the region.”

Mr. Fumio Takashima (President and CEO of BALS Corporation (Francfranc), Japan)
“In the world, design is always seen as a valuable resource. In Asia, Japan, Singapore and China, especially Hong Kong, being a new star of design, is now under the spotlight. I am looking forward to seeing the designs in Hong Kong being known in the world.”

Prof. Tong Huiming (Dean & Professor of School of Design, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, China)

“The designs are very eye-catching. I can see that Hong Kong designers have deep understanding of lifestyle. Many designs are interesting. It fully reviews designers' young, energetic, stylish, innovative style. It’s very impressive for me. From another side, it reflects the standard of Hong Kong designs as compared with those from the Mainland, are more advanced.
