|2017 - Another Vintage Year for Hong Kong Wine Fair
For some 19,000 visitors from 68 countries & regions, the HKTDC Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair 2016 was a sparkling success. The trade can now look forward to 2017 when more than 1,000 international exhibitors are expected to offer importers and distributors, wholesalers, sommeliers, hoteliers and restaurateurs a spectacular choice of wines, spirits, liqueurs, beer and other beverages.
|Hong Kong - a Taste of the Best
When Hong Kong dropped import duties on wine in early 2008, the way was cleared for Hong Kong to become the hub of wine trade in Asia, with imports of wine to the value of US$1.54 billion in 2016, a rise of 11.9% over 2015. Exports of wine rose by 9.2%, to US$666 million. Hong Kong itself is a highly sophisticated market for both wine and spirits with a great deal of expertise in the handling and marketing of these. Its proximity to the Chinese mainland, and its intimate knowledge of both the culture and the market, make Hong Kong the ideal catalyst for commercial operations there.
Trade in spirits, too, is brisk. In 2016, Hong Kong imported spirits worth US$569 million, representing a 16.6% growth over 2015, and exported nearly US$528 million. Buyers will be able to see spirits from around the world in the Whisky and Spirits Zone, and to learn more about them in the Whisky and Brandy Bar, a convivial gathering place. Buyers looking for beer will find that the Beer Zone offers many choices.
|Enriching activities around the fair
Typically around 70 events add interest and value to the fair. There is a very full programme of wine tastings, including grand tastings and master classes, bringing buyers the opportunity to learn more about regional wines from both old and new world wineries, as well as sample some very special vintages. Highlights of the 2017 fair will include the Wine Industry Conference, an annual event in which key industry players share their insights and expertise, and the Gala Dinner, which is a vibrant evening of superb food, wine and entertainment. The industry eagerly awaits the results of the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition, the most prestigious event of its kind in Asia.

Buyers find added value in a wonderful diversity of beverage products. Spirits, sake and beer are all on offer in their great variety. Beer Zone and Whisky and Spirits Zone are coming back this year. Buyers can explore the spirits and liquors from the Whisky & Brandy Bar, a cozy place where buyers can gather knowledge and contacts to aid their sourcing. Cocktail demonstrations in the Ice Bar show the versatility of spirits while seminars introduce expert speakers on fascinating topics.
Wine education is an important element of the fair. The Wine Gallery displays educational material and accessories related to wine, while the Public Day on the last day of the fair allows the trade to interact with consumers and gauge the development of the Asian wine market.

“Favourite International is part of Favourite Group, a conglomerate engaged in various businesses from garments and property to aviation, finance and wine. I am visiting Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair for the first time to extend our wine list. The fair is full of excitement. I have already identified about 30 potential suppliers from different countries for an array of wine products. At present, we do not carry any wines from Argentina. I have found an Argentinian winery at the fair and intend to spend US$19,000 for its red wines and white wines. Talks are underway with a Hong Kong exhibitor to purchase a unique wine dispenser at a cost of about US$25,000. |“Established in 2014, Winest is engaged in the wholesale business of wines and spirits in Cambodia. The wine market in Cambodia is growing fast with a rising interest from consumers. We are visiting Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair for the first time to enrich our product categories. This is a good show. We’ve found some interesting products and are in talks with several potential suppliers. They include an Argentinian exhibitor for red and white wines as well as a Finnish exhibitor for spirits. We are also negotiating with a Czech company to source their spirits and a Portuguese exhibitor for red wines. The initial order will involve one 20-foot container of various wines or spirits with each supplier upon successful negotiation. We like this fair and the results are encouraging.”

|“Vinomofo is a popular wine site catering to the needs of wine lovers in Australia and New Zealand. I have already found eight potential suppliers so far. Among them are three Argentinian exhibitors for Malbec red wines that are getting increasing interest among customers in Australia. I’ve also got in touch with three Spanish exhibitors and two Italian suppliers for a variety of red and white wines. The initial order will usually involve about 100 cases for more expensive wines. For wines carrying a lower price tag, the order may be 500 cases. This is a great show. It has been a rewarding journey and I really enjoyed it. I will definitely come again next year.”
