Chinese Medicine Fair and Conference:
Further Tapping the Potential of a Growing Industry

Riding on the success of last year, the International Conference & Exhibition of the Modernisation of Chinese Medicine & Health Products (ICMCM) will again run on a parallel-track format this year, allowing the extension of the external trade platform for Chinese medicine products while simultaneously gathering together industrial eminences for the exchange of information and for conferring on the direction of Chinese medicine development in the coming year.

Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and the Modernised Chinese Medicine International Association (MCMIA), the ICMCM will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 12 to 16 August. The first two days of the fair (12 and 13 August) will be open to trade visitors to allow them more time for business and information exchanges and to promote trade development. The public can attend the fair from 14 to 16 August to browse and shop for Chinese medicines and health products from different areas.

“The Hong Kong government announced last year that the healthcare industry, which covers Chinese medicine, is one of the six priority industries designated for promotion, and mentioned the development targets for Chinese medicine in its policy address. It is apparent, therefore, that the industry takes up a specific position in Hong Kong’s blueprint for economic development,” says Benjamin Chau, Deputy Executive Director of the HKTDC.

“It happens that the annual ICMCM provides the industry with a perfect platform on which practitioners can exchange opinions on scopes such as trade, academic research, and policies in their all-around tapping of the development potential of the Chinese medicine industry. This event has always been popular with the industry and the public. Last year, the fair attracted 125 exhibitors and more than 8,000 local and overseas buyers.”

The ICMCM 2010 has drawn the participation of more than 120 exhibitors, including Australian and British companies, which will join this grand event for the first time. Other participating countries and regions include the Chinese mainland, Canada, Japan, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, the United States and Taiwan. The fair also features regional pavilions set up respectively by Ningxia, Gansu, Jilin, and Qinghai, as well as a Korean Pavilion. The venue will be divided into different zones according to product categories, including Chinese Medicine, Health Supplement, Healthcare & Therapy, Raw Material, Equipment & Related Services, Research & Development, and Trade Association. With a gathering of superb exhibitors from around the world and an abundance of information, the fair should once again bring in thousands of buyers.

Harry Yeung, president of the MCMIA, says “With the efforts of the industry in the areas of laws and regulations, education and research over all these years, results are becoming evident. Some large public hospitals are already offering services in Chinese medicine, while university faculties concerned are now developing research and training in Chinese medicine in earnest. Now we should also seize opportunities. That’s why we are hosting a two-day conference under the theme of “Research & Application” during the exhibition to offer a chance for industrial practitioners and academics to exchange ideas with experts in Chinese medicine from around the world, and to promote the further internationalisation of Chinese medicine.”

The professional conference “Research & Application” will be held on 12 and 13 August. Topics include the latest development in the application, research, quality control, sustainable development, and digitalisation of Chinese medicine. Renowned scholars and industrial leaders from Australia, Austria, Japan, the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong will be invited as speakers, making the conference an international event in Chinese medicine one simply cannot afford to miss!

The International Conference & Exhibition of Modernization of Chinese Medicine & Health Products is held concurrently with 2 theme-related events, namely the “HKTDC Food Expo” and the “Hong Kong International Tea Fair”. The three events form an all-in-one platform that caters to the need for gourmet and health foods and products for those in trade and the general public.
